Understand Your Knee Pain

As we age, it is not uncommon for us to experience knee pain from various causes. Osteoarthritis of the knee is one of the more common causes and increases in prevalence as we get older. This type of knee pain can be extremely debilitating, especially for those with limited mobility due to other causes. It can then be difficult to perform everyday tasks and can significantly reduce your quality of life.

What are the symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis?

Generally the symptoms from osteoarthritis will worsen over time and include: A feeling of creaking, grating, or grinding of the knee joint with walking or moving, decreased flexibility, mobility, and range of motion of the knee joint, making it difficult to walk, get up and down from sitting, climb stairs, etc.

This symptom specifically could be a sign of hemarthrosis or bleeding into the knee joint. The pain associated with swelling usually responds well to this treatment type.

If you wake up in the morning with unexplainable stiffness in your knee then this treatment could alleviate your symptoms

If your knee pain gets worse with movement and better with rest, you could be eligible for this treatment.

If a lose in flexibility is making it difficult for you to do everyday activities such as climb stair or stand up and down, genicular artery embolization can help with these symptoms.

If you are feeling a creaking or grinding sensation in your knee while walking, you could be a good candidate for genicular artery embolization

Understand Osteoarthritis of the knee

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that is caused by the wearing down of the cartilage in the knee joint that protects the ends of the bones. When the cartilage wears down to the point that the bones rub together, the tissues surrounding the joint space, called the synovium, can react and become inflamed. The synovium can then begin to grow abnormally and this is called hypertrophy. As the synovium begins to hypertrophy, there are additional pain fibers from the nerves included in this tissue. The synovium then gets caught between the bones as the joint moves and can cause significant knee pain. This knee pain can be extremely debilitating, limiting mobility, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks, and enjoy leisure activities. It can also limit your ability to exercise and thus have a negative impact on your overall health.

Treatment For Knee Osteoarthritis – Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)

Currently, most treatments for knee pain involve medication, knee joint injections, physical therapy, or even knee replacement surgery. However, a less invasive solution exists: Genicular Artery Embolization.

What Exactly Is GAE?

Genicular Artery Embolization is a minimally invasive treatment option for knee pain. The procedure involves the injection of small spherical plastic particles into the genicular arteries, which are responsible for supplying blood to your synovium. These particles block the blood flow to the inflamed (painful) synovium around the knee joint. This reduces the size of the synovium and thus decreases the pain that is caused from the enlarged synovium and overactive nerve endings.

Am I a Good Candidate for Genicular Artery Embolization?

If you are experiencing knee pain due to osteoarthritis and you wish to avoid a knee replacement then you may be a great candidate for this procedure. Additionally, those who have already exhausted more conservative treatments like medication, knee injections, and physical therapy may find relief with genicular artery embolization.

Some patients who have persistent bleeding into the knee joint (hemarthrosis) following knee replacement may also be a candidate for GAE.

What is the process of Genicular Artery Embolization like?

GAE is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 1-2 hours. It is done in an Office Based Lab (OBL) which is part of the physicians office. Patients are given mild IV sedation to help them relax, but remain awake. A small catheter is inserted into the upper thigh after administering local anesthetic to the area. The catheter is then guided using real time X-ray to the small arteries that supply blood to the synovium of the knee joint. Small particles are then injected through the catheter into these vessels, shutting off the blood supply to the inflamed synovium. This reduces the inflammation, and thus reduces the knee pain associated with the inflamed synovium. After the procedure, patients are discharged from the office the same day. You should begin to see relief of knee pain in 1-2 weeks.

Benefits of Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)

Short Recovery Time

In a week or two, you’re back to your life quickly and with less pain. Most patients experience immediate relief

Outpatient Procedure

This short, outpatient procedure is done in-office allowing you to return home the same day.

Delay Surgery

With GAE, only a band aid is needed with almost no scarring. This also decreases recovery time
